My Counselling Practice
My Counselling Practice
My practice is heart centred and holistically oriented - working with the whole person and the whole picture. I work from an integrated somatic and body centred approach to counselling which means we will work together to bring awareness to what sensations and feelings you experience in your body as you tell your story. This will facilitate a deepening of your body/mind connection and allow a richer integration of experiences with the resolution of traumatic or overwhelming events.
Somatic psychology, feminist theory, systems theory, and cognitive behavioral therapy inform my practice and provide a context to work from. Somatic psychology links the neurophysiology and psychology with the wisdom of the body as it relates to trauma resolution and the inherent stress of daily living; system theory examines the inter and intra dependence of each relationship; feminist theory looks through the lens of power differences and societal/cultural influences; and cognitive behavioral therapy makes explicit the connections between thoughts, feelings and behaviors. While these theories inform the way I practice, it is the co-created relationship that exists between counsellor and client that is the essential catalyst for healing.
Since 2003, I have been sharing my knowledge and experiences through educational presentations, workshops and trainings in Vancouver and Victoria, BC; Halifax, NS; and Fort Simpson, NWT. As a counsellor and counsellor educator, I am a strong advocate for systemic social change and social justice and bring depth, richness, humour and authenticity to my work.
